🗺️ Where is Cape Verde? Your Tropical Gateway to Africa

Are you wondering exactly where this sun-drenched paradise is located? It’s closer than you think! Cape Verde (officially known as Cabo Verde) is a stunning archipelago that bridges the gap between Europe, Africa, and South America.

Here is everything you need to know about its location, islands, and how easy it is to get here.

📍 Location on the Map

  • 🌍 The Atlantic Ocean: Cape Verde is a volcanic archipelago located in the central Atlantic Ocean.

  • Off the Coast of Africa: The islands float roughly 500 kilometers off the west coast of Africa, directly parallel to Senegal, Mauritania, and the Gambia.

  • Sahara Latitude: Because it lies on the same latitude as the Sahara Desert, the eastern islands—including Sal—enjoy a beautiful, dry, and desert-like landscape surrounded by contrasting turquoise waters.

🏝️ One Country, Ten Unique Islands

Cape Verde consists of 10 islands (of which 9 are inhabited) and several smaller, uninhabited islets. The islands are geographically divided into two groups, named after the prevailing trade winds:

  1. 💨 The Barlavento Islands (Windward – North):This group includes Sal (where our apartments are located in the vibrant town of Santa Maria), Boa Vista, Santo Antão, São Vicente, São Nicolau, and Santa Luzia.

    • Character: These islands are famous for endless sandy beaches, world-class watersports, and stunning arid landscapes. It’s a true Surfers paradise with amazing spots for wingfoiling and kiting, where you can also discover the best local Restaurants & Bars and endless exciting Things to do.

  2. 🛡️ The Sotavento Islands (Leeward – South):

    • This group includes Santiago (home to the capital city, Praia), Fogo (famous for its active volcano), Brava, and Maio.

    • Character: These southern islands tend to be greener, more mountainous, and deeply rooted in traditional African culture.

✈️ How Close is it to Europe?

One of the biggest advantages of Cape Verde is that you can experience an authentic tropical, African island vibe without the exhausting long-haul travel.

  • ⏱️ Short Flight Time: A direct flight from Western Europe (such as Amsterdam, Brussels, or Düsseldorf) takes only about 6 hours.

  • 😴 No Jetlag: Cape Verde operates on West Africa Time (GMT -1). This means there is only a 1 to 2-hour time difference with Europe (depending on summer/winter time). You can step off the plane and step right onto the beach without losing a day to exhaustion!

  • 🗺️ Close to the Canary Islands: Geographically, Cape Verde is the southern neighbor of the Canary Islands (Spain) and the Azores (Portugal), but with a significantly warmer Climate Cape Verde year-round.

🌟 Why This Location Makes Sal the Perfect Destination

Because Sal is the most northeastern island, it is the closest to Europe and enjoys the most refreshing, reliable ocean breezes. It perfectly combines the safety, accessibility, and comfort of a top-tier holiday destination with the exotic charm and “No Stress” lifestyle of Cape Verde.
