☀️ Climate & Weather: 365 Days of Summer

Are you wondering when is the best time to visit Sal? The answer is simple: anytime! Sal is famous for its unique, hyper-predictable luxury climate. With 365 days of sunshine a year and a refreshing Atlantic breeze, it is the ultimate year-round paradise just a few hours from Europe.

🌡️ The Perfect Tropical Temperatures

Unlike many tropical destinations, Sal never gets uncomfortably humid or stiflingly hot.

  • Winter & Spring (December – May): A delightful average of 24°C to 26°C. The perfect escape from the European winter.

  • Summer & Autumn (June – November): A warmer, tropical vibe with temperatures peaking between 28°C and 30°C.

  • The Sea: The Atlantic Ocean water stays warm and inviting all year round, fluctuating beautifully between 22°C and 27°C—perfect for swimming, diving, and surfing.

🌬️ The Famous Trade Winds (A Surfer’s Dream)

Sal is world-renowned for its steady wind conditions, which shape the island’s unique climate.

  • The Wind Season: From November to April, the reliable Alizé trade winds blow across the island (usually around 5 to 6 Beaufort).

  • For Surfers: This is the absolute peak season for windsurfers, kitesurfers, and wave surfers from all over the globe.

  • For Sunbathers: The wind acts as a wonderful, natural air conditioner. It keeps you feeling fresh and cool while relaxing on the beach, preventing that heavy, oppressive heat feel.

☔ What About the Rainy Season?

  • Virtually No Rain: Sal is one of the driest islands in the Cape Verde archipelago. There is no traditional ‘rainy season’.

  • Late Summer Showers: If it rains at all, it usually happens in August or September. These are typically short, warm, tropical showers that clear up within minutes, leaving the skies blue again. You certainly don’t need to pack an umbrella!

🧳 Weather Tips: Good to Know Before You Pack

  • 💨 Evening Chill: Because of the constant ocean breeze, the temperature can feel a bit fresher as soon as the sun goes down. We highly recommend packing a light sweater, cardigan, or light jacket for your cozy evening walks and dinners in Santa Maria.

  • 🏜️ Bruma Seca (Sahara Dust): Occasionally (mostly between December and February), the wind carries fine sand over from the Sahara desert. This natural phenomenon creates a warm, misty haze called Bruma Seca. It’s a unique touch of African nature—and the reason our apartment windows get beautifully ‘sandblasted’ by the wind!

  • 🧴 Protect Your Skin: Because the ocean breeze feels so wonderfully cooling, it is easy to forget how powerful the African sun is. Always wear good sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), even when it feels breezy or slightly overcast!
